With the move to
a bigger and better venue and tens of thousands of
dollars in prizes up for grabs, the 2009 Townsville Game
Fishing Club’s “Townsville Marine Predators Tournament”
was one of the most successful, despite the weather.
Even after postponing the event to the next weekend due
to bad weather, a large crowd turned out to fish the
Predators Tournament in the hope of winning the Bluefin
Aluminium Boat, 15hp Suzuki outboard and trailer package
generously donated by Townsville Marine.
This year’s event
was held at a new bigger and better location, the future
new Townsville Marine yard off Enterprise Road at The
Bohle. The addition of food and drink stalls and a live
band for entertainment,
all of which provided a great family atmosphere for the
weigh-in afternoon.
With over 16
different prize categories, half of which apply to land
or creek based species there is something for all types
of fishermen. This is family event, in its seventh
year, allows all competitors have an equal chance of
winning a prize. As you will see from this year’s
winners list below, prize winning fish are similar to
those everyone catches on their weekend fishing trips.

Junior entrants
were well catered for this year as usual, with the first
150 juniors registering with an adult at the Friday
night sign-on receiving a complimentary tackle box with
300 pieces (worth $40.00) of tackle donated by The
Fishing Warehouse. All juniors were also eligible to win
any prize from the 16 categories, plus Special Junior
Only cash prizes of $ 50.00 for each award category.
Big events
like this don’t just happen and besides the dedicated
group of club members who run the event, nothing would
occur without sponsors and their generous support each
year. People attending events like this should always
take the time to peruse the list of sponsors and then
show their appreciation by shopping at the sponsor’s
businesses and thanking the sponsors. All sponsors
appreciate your business and thanks and it is a good way
to show your support for the event’s sponsors.
As they say
“Support those who support your sport”.
The Predators Tournament gives individuals, groups of
friends and families a great opportunity to experience
fishing as a competitive and exciting sport. The
Townsville Game Fishing Club boasts well over 200
members and has attributed the increase in club
membership to this tournament by introducing people to
fishing as a social, team, competitive and an
exhilarating sport rather than simply chasing fillets
for the freezer.
Club President, Tom Hatrick, says that this event has
made a huge impact on our sport by showing how much fun
game fishing is and the social aspect for competitors at
the sign-on, weigh-in and out on the water. You don’t
have to own a $1,000,000 boat to participate, with the
majority of club members fishing from well-equipped 5.5
mtr and up trailer boats.
Congratulations
to all the winners and we hope to
see
you all at next year’s event- definitely to be held on
the May Day long weekend.
